president of the nra, wayne lapierre. answering questions for the first time since this shooting. i want to get right to it. welcome back to the program. >> thank you, david. >> you promised in the wake of this massacre 26 people murdered that the nra would, quote, offer meaningful contributions to help make sure this never happens again. if we boil down your appearance before the news media on friday, this was your message. >> the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. >> you proposed armed guards in school. we'll talk about that in some detail in a moment. you confronted the news media, you blamed hollywood and the gaming industry but never once did you concede that guns could actually be part of the problem. is that a meaningful contribution, mr. lapierre, or a dodge? >> david, i said what i honestly thought and what hundreds of millions of people all over this country will believe will actually make a difference. i can't imagine a more horrible tragedy than what happened. we all have 5-year-olds in our family in some way. we all put ourselves in that sit
of that debate, the ceo and executive vice president of the nra, wayne lapierre. i want to get right to it. >> the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. >> you proposed armed guards in school. we'll talk about that in some detail in a moment. you confronted the news media, you blamed hollywood and the gaming industry but never once did you concede that guns could actually be part of the problem. is that meaningful contribution, mr. lapierre, or a dodge? >> david, i said what i honestly thought and what hundreds of millions of people all over this country will believe will actually make a difference. i can't imagine a more horrible tragedy. we all have 5-year-olds in our family in some way. we all put ourselves in that situation and have tears in our eyes. the nra, we have 11,000 police training instructors, 80,000 police families, we're 4 million members and we set down and we said what can we do will actually make a difference today to make these kids safe? >> but not conceding guns play any role about the meaningful contribution? >> look, i know there's a m
in joe and the other top aides in white house and said, we have to act within ten days before the nra gets organized. and they failed to do it. they tried and they failed. and lbj had a bill that had been bottled up in committee for months and months for, you know, licensing and registration and they signed something much, much less in october and he spoke out, president johnson did, in october of 1968, forcefully and angrily about the failure even after robert kennedy's death to do something to defeat the gun lobby. while i have the spirit of the season and a feeling that things have changed and saw joe's powerful -- joe, your powerful statement in the aftermath, in the immediate aftermath of the killings, i have my doubts as to whether this president and this congress have the guts and the strength and the political courage to go forward. >> they have to move quickly, don't they, john heilemann? >> yeah, i think they do. you can't lose them. the sense of moral urgency that comes with proximity to this thing. and right now the nra is on its heels defenders of our insanely permissive
>>> plus the nra's double down. the organization's ceo says if it's crazy to arm police in school, then call him crazy. >> i know there's a media machine in this country that wants to blame guns every time something happens. i know there's an anti-second amendment instrument in this town. >>> but first eight days until the fiscal cliff deadlines, through the has of congress not a creature is stirring, not even a lawmakers. hopes of a deal are fading. before taking off, the president urged congress that pass a scaled-back stop-gap measure. >> senators agreed on sunday to pass -- >> i think unfortunately there will only be a small deal. >> it is going to be a patch. >> kristin welker, traveling with the president in honolulu. the question is will he be cutting hi vacation short? does he have a royal to play? or is it up to the senate, as some are saying? >> reporter: first of all, i think it is likely we'll see him cut his vacation short. senate majority leader harry reid, minority leader mitch mcconnell will have to work together. a lot of focus shifts to mcdonnell. he has to try t
in our school to protect our children, then call me crazy. >> the head of the nra speaks out exclusively to nbc news intensifying the emotionally charged debate on gun control. it's monday, december 24th. welcome to this special edition of "m schsnb"msnbc." as for president obama and john boehner, they are miles apart. neither are them talking about the deal the country really needs. kristin, we were talking yesterday that there's a possibility the president was considering coming back early perhaps thshould they strike a deal of some sort. >> i think it's likely president obama will cut his vacation short. we haven't gotten guidance about when that is going to happen. the white house is calling this a working vacation, but the reality is that talks are largely deadlocked over the fiscal cliff. there have been a few conversations going on at the staff level but really the expectation is that the hard work is going to get done when lawmakers return to washington after the christmas holiday, a little bit later on this week. that's when they're going to resume negotiations in earnest. of co
. it's the one thing that would keep people safe. >> that's the nra ceo on "meet the press" yesterday doubling down on the call to arm our nation's schools and puts him at odds of most americans according to 49% saying it's more important to control gun ownership. 42% favor protecting 2nd amendment rights. i want to bring in shannon watts. as many people watched on friday, not only we saw the first reaction in the press briefing that wane lappeire and pressed and wayne is blaming everything but guns and opposed to any new gun regulation and wants to talk about the other possibilities of video games to hollywood to the media to actually arming schools. is this a point of a pr crisis for the nra, especially logically not to have guns in the discussion at all? >> well, unfortunately, i think they know exactly what they're doing. and at the end of the day what they're doing is trying to make a profit and arm everyone in the country and, you know, 80 million moms are not going to let 4 million members of the nra drive the discussion on this. you talk about waking a sleeping giant. i believ
a short-term deal under the tree? plus, the nra not backing off its so-called solution to school gun violence. >> if it's crazy to call for putting police and armed securing our school to protect our children, then call me crazy. >> that's the wrong debate to have if you want to talk about protecting our children. >> but, first, don't go looking up the chimney for a deal on the fiscal cliff. there are just eight days, that's it, until the deadline to reach a deal, and there was little progress as lawmakers left town for the holiday. before the president took off for his hawaiian vacation with his family on friday, he pressured kfshs to pass a smaller deal, to delay those automatic spending cuts and to extend tax cuts for all except for the wealthiest of americans. now, while senators on both sides of the aisle, they spoke in support of at least a smaller deal on sunday. joe lieberman seemed to have less hope. >> it's the first time that i feel that it's more likely that we will go over the cliff than not, and that if we allow that to happen, it will be the most colossal consequential
. pete, the nra not budging on its message from the press briefing that it gave on friday to the appearance on "meet the press" yesterday. their point is that the best issue for the gun control problem is not more regulation, but to have armed officers, trained armed people manning our schools. if past is prologue, where is the nra's next move going forward? >> well, you know, i think that's a good question because past may not be prologue here. the past was that the obama administration saw absolutely no chance of getting this flew congress. president obama when he campaigned for his first term, said he would like to look at reveezing the assault weapons ban. the white house sent some gentle signal early on they might try to do that, and it was instantly clear that they backed away from it. the mere prospect of president obama's being elected caused a huge run on ammunition, police departments were almost running out of it. now many democrats think the situation is different because of newtown and the other mass shootings this year, so i guess we're going to find out whet
